Hotcakes is singer-songwriter Carly Simon's fourth studio album. Released in 1974, it became one of her biggest selling albums. The album featured the major hits "Mockingbird", a duet with her then-husband James Taylor (a cover of a 1963 hit for Inez and Charlie Foxx), and "Haven't Got Time for the Pain". Recorded during her pregnancy with her first child, many of the album's songs reflected Simon's upbeat mood during this period.

Letters Never Sent is singer-songwriter Carly Simon's twentieth album, and eighteenth studio album, released in 1994. Simon has stated the inspiration for the album came when she found an old box of letters that she'd written, but never mailed. She wrote "Like A River" in honor of her mother, Andrea Simon, and "Touched By The Sun" for her dear friend, Jackie Onassis, both of whom died from cancer in 1994.

Anthology is singer-songwriter Carly Simon's 26th album, and first anthology album, released in November 2002. It is a two-disc set with all the songs personally picked by Simon. Over the course of the two discs, every one her studio albums (up until that point) is represented with at least one song (not including her just-released Christmas album or her 1993 opera, Romulus Hunt: A Family Opera, on which she only actually performs on one track).

After that, Simon released a soundtrack and a "family opera" performed largely by others. Letters Never Sent is her first new studio album in more than four years and only her second of the '90s. In Simon's case, though, this is a good idea. In the '70s, she tended to record too frequently, before she'd written enough strong material, resulting in uneven albums. And with Have You Seen Me Lately, which was freighted with the concerns of middle age, she seemed to have written herself into a corner

Album Intro: In the liner notes of Letters Never Sent, Carly Simon reveals that during her '93 spring cleaning she discovered a box of old, unmailed letters in her closet. I set a handful of them to music,' she explains, 'adding a rhyme here, deleting a noun or verb there, and allowing the emotions to find comfortable rhythms. Simon hasn't completely abandoned parallel meter, rhyme schemes, or verse-chorus structure, but she has loosened their grip sufficiently to create a new kind of pop song which has the prose feel and specific focus of a personal letter
