Butter is the first studio album by Scottish electronic musician Hudson Mohawke. In 2009, Hudson Mohawke signed to Warp Records, despite a very limited track record of official releases; in fact, the bulk of his releases were unofficial tracks and DJ mixes circulated on the Internet.

Butter, Hudson Mohawke’s debut full-length album for Warp, lit up the electronic music landscape in 2009 like a huge neon sign from the digital maximalist future. Fusing warped and wonky day-glo excess with the RBMA alumni’s sensibility, the genre-melding record bridged a gap between worlds, and you could argue that his innovations unwittingly blazed a trail for everything from trap-influenced club music to PC Music. The album also helped to catapult the Glaswegian bedroom artist born Ross Birchard into A-list music territory.

Hudson Mohawke - Butter After first crippling structural boundaries with his promo-only Hudson's Heeters mixtape, some of which evolved into the Polyfolk Dance EP which dropped on Warp earlier this year, Hudson Mohawke, AKA Ross Birchard, has maintained his stance as an excitable producer with a child-like, frontier-less outlook and a healthy penchant for mutilating vocals into helium powered chops. His debut album, Butter, opens with a suitably sexed-up Sesame Street introduction, as Birchard welcomes us into his head, walking us through his thoughts, propelling us purposefully with vibrant chords and pompous guitar solos before opener proper, "Gluetooth," which skips from the lovable splash of the opening piano into cut-up glory and kick drum thump mania, before he strips back the.

Hudson Mohawke has such a unique and strange sound. He was born and raised in Glasgow, Scotland, and I think it's the super-obscure, super-distant highland warrior in me that identifies with his music. His music is electronic with a healthy hip-hop influence, not too strong but definitely audible. The skits are great, and Olivier Daysoul (reminiscent of Dam Funk) adds a new kind of exciting, carefree funk feel to the album.
