Notes

Recorded from 1967 to 1968.
This is a collection of songs, prior to TROUT MASK REPLICA, some of which were recorded by Captain Beefheart & His Magic Band during the band's relatively short tenure at Buddah in 1966 and '67. It is comprised of two-thirds of SAFE AS MILK, a couple songs from MIRROR MAN, and four from the I MAY BE HUNGRY BUT I SURE AIN'T WEIRD collection (a later collection with alternate versions and song which surfaced on STRICTLY PERSONAL).

Tracks 1-8 ℗ 1967 BMG Direct Marketing Inc
Tracks 9-10 ℗ 1971 BMG Direct Marketing Inc
Tracks 11-14 ℗ 1992 BMG Direct Marketing Inc

Track 1 is incorrectly titled and is "Sure 'Nuff 'N' Yes I Do"
Track 7 is incorrectly titled and is "Abba Zaba"
(Both from "Safe As Milk"). Despite the subtitle and claims of this issue, the cover image is that of Beefheart in the later Trout Mask Replica era and the last 6 tracks were never recorded on Buddah. That company took action against the band when they left the label after making 'Safe As Milk'. BMG acquired back catalogs subsequent to Buddah's demise in the late '70s.

Released in 2006, this compressed sampler of early Captain Beefheart strata bundles seven of the twelve tunes originally issued on the album Safe as Milk with five much looser experimental episodes from the next leg of the Beefheart saga by tapping into material that would appear on the Strictly Personal, Plain Brown Wrapper, and Mirror Man albums. This includes the piece entitled "Safe as Milk" which was not included on the album of the same name. feat: Captain Beefheart & the Magic Band.

A short (47 minutes), sharp compilation of tracks from the remastered releases of Safe As Milk and The Mirror Man Sessions. All of the long Mirror Man jams are omitted in preference for some of the alternate takes that first appeared on I May Be Hungry but I Sure Ain’t Weird. Probably one of the more interesting compilations that have been released although there are no surprises for any fan who already owns everything. This would make a good introduction for someone who is more ‘rock’ oriented.
