Song is Philosopher's Stone by Van Morrison of his album 'back on top'.

But Van Morrison did it so well on Philosopher’s Stone that most people, even today, consider it to be one of his best releases. I’m not sure if that qualifies Philosopher’s Stone to be considered an actual album or not, since it wasn’t designed in that manner. The release is a double disc, encompassing some thirty tracks of, as I said, material that was mostly unreleased from the years 1970 through 1988, but also includes a couple of alternate takes of well known numbers from his previous album's. this albums version of Wonderful Remark will hold you motionless. Now, I’m a huge fan of the man, and I will say that this could very easily have been a single CD release, as there are only about fifteen of the songs that I really dig, but that in no way means that you won’t like the rest.

Van Morrison has always been a prolific artist, releasing nearly an album a year for 30 years. All the while, he had a stockpile of unreleased material in the vaults, much of which became legendary among collectors. A selection of this material was planned for inclusion in a box set, but when he realized the sheer amount of worthy material, he decided to separate the unreleased cuts and release them as the double-disc set The Philosopher's Stone.

How Van Morrison kept this collection of outakes from albums from 1970-1985 from release it amazes me. This two CD set shows the man crafting his work and developing his vast talent. A must for all real Van the Man fans!!!!! by burkholder200113 Mar, 2010.

Van Morrison’s music has always had a timeless quality, and on The Philosopher’s Stone - a generally stellar collection of previously unreleased material, alternate versions and rarities - we discover one reason why. It turns out that Van is a man who will serve no song before its time. For example, Real Real Gone - a swinging highlight of 1990’s Enlightenment album - turns up here on an island-flavored take from 1980. Wonderful Remark, which graced the 1983 King of Comedy soundtrack, is heard in an extended eight-minute version recorded way back in 1973.

The Philosopher's Stone Volume One was originally scheduled to be released in July 1996. When it was released, some of the tracks had been changed; "When I Deliver", "John Brown's Body" and "I'm Ready" were replaced by "The Street Only Knew Your Name", "Western Plains" and "Joyous Sound"  . Van Morrison on the previously unreleased songs. It's hard to work out why you didn't put something out at the time When I was with Warner Brothers they were very minimalist.
