Here, endearing for his joyous, occasionally wrong-footed style-hopping, David Byrne gleefully releases himself to fate, both critical and existential, like a man who's breathed in the dust of ceiling tile, cinder, faxes, and bone. He even wears Oshkosh overalls on the back. Though David Byrne may sing the part of Bizet's Nadir, this album is anything but. It fits alongside the best of his career and adds another solid release to a solo catalog which will hopefully become more cherished in time. In 20 years, as we straighten our faces with botulism, braces, and stem cells, the album will stand up. "On my high school folder/ I drew a big gorilla/ Something familiar yet something far, far away," Byrne sings. With that last phrase, he could mean the gorilla or youth.
Released March 16, 2004. Grown Backwards Tracklist. 1. Glass, Concrete, and Stone Lyrics. 2. The Man Who Loved Beer Lyrics.
David Byrne took a different approach to writing Grown Backwards-perhaps the most personal and emotionally expressive album of his storied career-than he had previously used. Marco de Canaveses, referenced in the song, was the town she was born i. Arranged by Stephen Barber, Grown Backwards was produced by David Byrne and Patrick Dillett and features longtime collaborator Mauro Refosco on percussion and mallet instruments, Paul Frazier (Chic, Imani Coppola) on bass, and the Tosca Strings from Austin, Texas. Additionally, Carla Bley's jazz band plays on the song "Empire.

Album · 2004 · 15 Songs. But this 2004 release finds Byrne bristling with a sense of ambitious eclecticism rare even by his own elevated standards, a sensibility that carries Byrne deeper into the classical realm than he's ever been. Austin, Texas' chamber outfit the Tosca Strings inform the melancholy, post-modernist opener "Glass, Concrete & Stone," the limber 'n' loopy rap fusion "Tiny Apocalypse," and "Un Di Felice, Eterea," aria adaptations from Verdi's La Traviata.
David Byrne's self-titled album was released in 1994. Angels" and "Back in the Box" were the two main singles released from the album.
