Rimsky-Korsakov: 3 Symphonies, Capriccio Espagnol, Russian Easter Festival Overture. Rimsky Korsakov’s absolute music seems to suffer a bit from a lack of program, which is certainly evident in the academic Symphony 1 and the more thematic and colorful Symphony 3. In comparison to the other works in this set, Antar Symphony, Russian Easter Overture, and Capriccio Espagnol, which are full of Korsakov’s requisite exoticism, orientalism, and modal settings, the symphonies.

Rimsky-Korsakov: Capriccio espagnol. Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagñol and the Russian Easter Overture are the most popular works on this 2011 Naxos release by Gerard Schwarz and the Seattle Symphony, but don't sell the rest of the program short for unfamiliarity. Even though the remaining overtures are less popular with western audiences (undoubtedly because they aren't played as often as the featured piece), they are still colorful works that are full of Rimsky-Korsakov's dazzling orchestration, memorable melodies, and sparkling exoticism, a quality that was especially prized by Russian composers. The reproduction is generally excellent through the album, though there are a few moments when the balance of sections seems slightly off and some soft notes are not fully audible.

Capriccio espagnol, Op. 34, is the common Western title for a five movement orchestral suite, based on Spanish folk melodies, composed by the Russian composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov in 1887. Rimsky-Korsakov originally intended to write the work for a solo violin with orchestra, but later decided that a purely orchestral work would do better justice to the lively melodies. The Russian title is Каприччио на испанские темы (literally, Capriccio on Spanish Themes).
