All of this music (as with all of Thelonious Monk's Milestone reissues) has been repackaged definitively on his 15-CD Complete Riverside Recordings, but those listeners unable to afford or acquire that massive box are well advised to get this two-LP set. The great pianist/composer is heard on his famous "Brilliant Corners" session with tenor-saxophonist Sonny Rollins and drummer Max Roach, and also on a full album with a 1959 quintet co-starring tenor-saxophonist Charlie Rouse and cornetist Thad Jones
Thelonious Monk Brilliant Corners LP on Riverside. During his early years, Thelonious Monk was considered one of the most challenging, provocative and disturbing figures in modern music. His music was regarded as difficult to listen to and understand, causing many fans initially to shy away from trying to dig Monk. This album was actually one of the major factors in the successful battle to win new and wider acceptance for Monk. In the sequence of his Riverside discography, it followed two initial albums devoted entirely to 'standards' and offered the first occasion on this label for Thelonious to express himself basically through his own writing. Creating music for five instrumental voices in terms of his personal and unorthodox construction, approach and phrasing, he produced some startlingly brilliant examples of the great depth, wit, and strength of his style. producer Orrin Keepnews.

Thelonious Monk was a pivotal figure in the history of jazz, using dissonance as an asset rather than a mistake. His compositions and playing style are uniquely his and his alone. Though often imitated, no one has ever come close to matching what he was pulling off 70 years ago! Throughout his recorded career, he can be heard playing solo piano, with small combos and with big bands and orchestras. RK: There is a point during Monk’s solo in Little Rootie Tootie, around 2:10 seconds in, that highlights the brilliance showcased throughout the album. Monk flutters on two notes, then resolves it, does it again, and then hits a fantastic run that transitions perfectly to the B section. The trio swings with such ease through the compositions that it would be easy with a cursory listen to disregard the complexity.
