The era produced many songs from all over the world, with themes ranging from waiting for a lover’s return to the support of resistance movements to old-fashioned battle marches.

As World War II raged through Europe, a group of Soviet Yiddish scholars embarked on an ambitious goal to preserve Jewish culture of the 1940s. These historians believed that it was their duty to record stories, poems and songs by Jews who lived through this. They hoped to publish these songs, but the project was never completed. The Soviet Union, World War II: A team of ethnomusicologists led by Moisei Beregovsky collects hundreds of Yiddish songs documenting the wartime Jewish experience. Eventually freed, Beregovsky dies believing the collection is lost.

An epic discovery of Yiddish songs from the World War II and the Holocaust brought together Sergei Erdenko (Russia’s greatest Roma violinist, and longtime collaborator of Yehudi Menuhin) with an elite ensemble of virtuosi from the worlds of folk, Jewish, Roma, classical and jazz music. Going beyond klezmer, the album to be released by Six Degrees in 2018, re-defines the performance of Jewish music for the twenty-first century. J. Yiddish Glory: The Lost Songs of World War II is the new recording of music created during the darkest chapter of European Jewish history. In the midst of World War II, a group of scholars led by ethnomusicologist Moisei Beregovsky (1892 – 1961) discovered songs written by Jewish Red Army soldiers, refugees, victims and survivors of Ukrainian ghettos  . The album, released February 2018 is the result of a remarkable collaboration between artist Psoy Korolenko and Yiddish Professor Anna Shternshis. Although some archival documents had their melodies preserved, most were simply lyrics written on small scraps of paper.
