Dexter Gordon (February 27, 1923 – April 25, 1990) was an American jazz tenor saxophonist. He was one of the first players of the instrument in the bebop idiom of musicians such as Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Bud Powell. Gordon's height was 6 feet 6 inches (198 cm), so he was also known as "Long Tall Dexter" and "Sophisticated Giant". His studio and performance career spanned over 40 years.

Exclusive Prime pricing. Gotham City seems like filler. The best tracks are Hi-Fly and Nightingale, for the reason that they showcase Dexter's melodic storytelling, which was increasingly becoming the reason to listen to Dexter as the physical aspect of his playing started declining. Dexter shows that he can still handle uptempo swinging blues on this album, but he can't reach quite the same heights of as he could a few years before. His tone is less robust, his attack is slightly less certain, and he seems to fall short a little in bringing his ideas to fruition.

1 3. Encapsulating an era. 1. 2. The Essential Dexter Gordon. To me, Dexter Gordon truly embodies an era of Jazz appreciation that lives on into today. This album is such an accurate taste of the music which marked a significant era in history. The Jazz is so improvised as it should be. It is so spontaneous and even at times romantic. Dexter Gordon was a great act, starring as one of the top 20th century Jazz Saxophonists amidst Miles Davis and Charlie Parker, and here we get a fresh taste.
