The Symphony No. 3 by Gustav Mahler was written in 1896, or possibly only completed in that year, but composed between 1893 and 1896. It is his longest piece and is the longest symphony in the standard repertoire, with a typical performance lasting around 90 to 105 minutes. It was voted one of the ten greatest symphonies of all time in a survey of conductors carried out by the BBC Music Magazine.

Klemperer's LP recording of Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony on Vox with Viennese forces was probably the most commonly heard version of that work for American listeners. In 1955, London/Decca released Knappertsbusch's recording with the Vienna Philharmonic of Bruckner's "Wagner" Symphony besting less robust versions by Goehr and Fekete. But if we fast-forward to the turn of the millennium, collectors could choose among 40 recordings of the "Resurrection" and among at least 14 of Bruckner's symphonic homage to Wagner. In 1951, he co-founded SPA Records with Norman Fox, a local New York businessman. As conductor, Adler made his recordings almost exclusively with Viennese orchestras, many of them pick-up groups assembled for the occasion. Released on labels like Alpha
This very Italian conductor, born in Milan in 1933, who was for fifteen years the director of the Scala trained in Vienna with Hans Swarowsky is extremely familiar with the culture of Central Europe, of its literature and its fine arts. It is with the Second symphony by Mahler that he chooses to make his debut, at thirty-two, with the Philharmonic Orchestra of Vienna. The Youth Orchestra he founded in 1986 bears the name of Gustav Mahler. Since then, Abbado continues to exhale the complex beauty of the Viennese composers’ symphonies in all the concert halls of the world.
