It seems reasonably clear that in 1989, when the Columbia Music Collection issued its two-CD, 42-track Irving Berlin volume in the Great American Composers series, drawing upon the Columbia Records catalog for recordings of Berlin songs, a second volume was not contemplated. True, a few of Berlin's best-known songs were missing, but most of them were included. The prolific songwriter was the 20th century's most successful crafter of hits, but necessarily, this second collection ranks well below the first in terms of popular content.
Lesbian American Composers. American Composers Series. OverviewUncle Willie. Feeling burned out on underground epics after the disastrous Mole Show tour, The Residents decided to postpone work on Part Three of the Mole Trilogy. Essentially, the concept was a musical exploration of various American composers, two at a time, juxtaposing one against the other, with each featured on opposite sides of an LP. The band would first deconstruct the music then rebuild it around the Residential values of naivete, atonal innocence and playful pretense. The third album in the series was tentatively titled The Trouble with Harrys, featuring the music of Harry Partch and Harry Nilsson, but The Residents unexpectedly abandoned the project in 1986.
We have had influential composers, composers you didn't know, and composers who died odd deaths. So, filling in the gap we now present the greatest composers ever. His first symphony is largely imitative of a more Classical sound, but his second begins the career of the Mahler everyone knows when they hear his music. It is nicknamed the Resurrection, and it’s final movement’s premiere was said to have made women pass out, and grown men weep. His third is the longest symphony ever written, at an average performance length of 1 hour and 30 minutes.
While the great composers like Bach and Beethoven may still reign supreme in classical circles, a generation of new young composers are challenging its traditional boundaries. From the haunting ‘indie-classical’ sounds of Missy Mazzoli to Judd Greenstein’s post-genre adventures, we profile 10 innovative composers bringing new life to classical music.
