Fifth (the title is Fifth while the front cover shows the number 5), is the fifth studio album by the jazz rock band Soft Machine, released in 1972. Fifth was the first Soft Machine album recorded after the departure of founding member Robert Wyatt and continued the band's progression away from their original blend of psychedelic and progressive rock towards jazz fusion

Soft Machine ‎– Fifth. Label: Sony BMG Music Entertainment ‎– 82876872902. Series: Soft Machine Remastered - The CBS Years 1970-1973 –. Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Remastered. Original album released as CBS 64806 in July 1972. Recorded at Advision Studios, London, November 1971 through February 1972.

In places on Fifth, there does seem to be an element of tension between the more structured approach of Ratledge and Hopper and the free-form inclinations of Dean. The looser style of Dean's squalling sax playing is foregrounded particularly on "As If" - another Ratledge piece. A certain constituency among Soft Machine fans tends to concentrate on the band's earlier releases and to consider everything from Fourth onward less compelling.

Box includes Soft Machine Third, Fourth, Fifth, Six & Seven. The remaining trio recorded its first proper album, Soft Machine, for ABC/Probe in 1968. The considerable melodic elements and vocal harmonies of their 1967 recordings were now giving way to more challenging, artier postures that sought – sometimes successfully, sometimes not – to meld the energy of psychedelic rock with the improvisational pulse of jazz.

Soft Machine (Teddybears album). Soft Machine is the fifth studio album by Teddybears, released on 12 September 2006 on Big Beat Recordings and Columbia Records. It is the first album the band released under the name "Teddybears", as they had previously been Teddybears STHLM. Excluding "Intro", "Riot Going On" is the only new song from the group.

Like most Soft Machine, Five is fantastic jazz fussion. Listening, you hear ambient, eletronic loops, keyboard experiments; all the invention any Miles or Mahavishnu or any top flight jazz band of the era were developing, each with an indvidual stamp. But Robert Wyatt had left the band after Fourth. By now, the Softs had dropped the dada humor that made the first two albums, and Wyatt's "Moon In June" from Third, one of the most hip and unique bands, ever, in rock.
