The Plan is an archival compilation album of early demo recordings by British new wave band Tubeway Army (the band name originally used by Gary Numan), released in 1984. While the demos on The Plan were originally recorded in 1977 and 1978, they remained unreleased until September 1984 when Numan's former label, Beggars Banquet Records, issued them a year after Numan left the label.

Pleasure principal MAY be the superior album ( or the 'down in the park'predecessor ) but this is harder, rocking and synths both.

Tubeway Army's main claim to fame is that Gary Webb (aka Gary Numan) first came to the public's attention here. The band was formed in London, UK in 1977 by Gary Numan and the late Paul Gardiner. What started as a British punk band would evolve into something quite different.

In mid-1979, Gary Numan and Tubeway Army emerged as the last true superstar of the 1970s on the back of an icicle synth sound that seemingly slammed the future into the face of everyone who turned on the radio. Less than 18 months earlier, however, they were just another ragtag punk band, demoing a clutch of songs in the hope that their record label would let them make another record. That particular crime is not too apparent on The Plan - at least when compared to Replicas et al. But an enjoyable album should not be allowed to suffer for the success of its successors and, though you never really discover precisely what the titular plan might have been, you can at least applaud Numan for hatching it.

This is a collection of early Gary Numan songs that were penned, recorded, and released (as singles or live) in 1977 and 1978.

Tubeway Army were a London-based new wave and electronic band led by lead singer Gary Numan. They were the first band of the electronic era to have a synthesiser-based number-one hit, with their single "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and its parent album Replicas both topping the UK charts in mid-1979.
