Delving ever deeper into the R&B archives of the Memphis-based Stax Records, 4000 Volts of Stax & Satellite (1995) is, as the name implies, the fourth in a sporadic series from Ace Records. The nearly two-dozen platters contained within this single-CD volume consist of previously hard to locate, formerly unreleased alternates of classic soul from the late '50s and '60s, and here sidestep into the Stax predecessor, Satellite Records. The label literally began in the garage of one-time fiddler Jim Stewart, and initial offerings were not R&B, but rather pop and country.
