From the plugged holes in the peghead, it would appear that this instrument was originally made as an eleven string guitar, a design popular in Andalusia during the last half of the nineteenth century. It was undoubtedly converted to its present six-string configuration prior to its acquisition by Segovia. Andrés Segovia launched his career playing this guitar; he concertized and recorded with it from 1912 to 1937 and played it at his United States debut in New York's Town Hall in 1929. Geography: Madrid, Spain. Medium: Spruce, rosewood, cedar, ebony, ivory or bone. Dimensions: Height (Total): 38 in.

During his life he was a renowned maker, and had won a first prize medal for his guitars at the International Exposition in Madrid in 1953 as well as first prize later in an exposition in Ronda. He trained his sons Jose and Vicente Checa, Vicente Perez Checa, Antonio Ruiz, and Pedro Martínez Peñalver. He was a watchmaker by profession, but built guitars in his spare time.
