Soon after the band's 1980 album Shine On, Jeffrey and Billy Osborne departed to start solo careers. Although the title here seems simple, "Love Ballad" was influential, ushering in a newer, strong production style that had little or no sonic resemblance to anything before it. The reasons for that come from the songwriter, Skip Scarborough, who was just starting out. The producers here, brothers Fonce Mizell and Larry Mizell, had been producing Blue Note jazz/R&B artists like Bobbi Humphrey and Donald Byrd. There are also key phrases on "Love Ballad" like the riff "What we have is much more than they can se. Although Osborne sings it a great number of times, he brings a different shading to each go around. This song was also done as a 1978 remake by George Benson and on his version he speeds it up and diminishes the emotional intent. For K-Ci & JoJo's debut as a duo, they also did a cover of this that too failed to capture the potency of the .
Released from their album Love to the World, it spent two weeks at number one on the R&B singles chart in November 1976, and peaked at number twenty on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. George Benson released an up-tempo rendition of "Love Ballad" in 1979. It peaked at number three on the R&B charts and number eighteen on the Billboard Hot 100. It also reached number 12 on the Adult Contemporary chart. Benson's cover is the most successful version of the song.
