Victor Opera Company Leoncavallo: Gems from Pagliacci Recorded in 1913 A project for the revitalization of opera as a popular art form: sing all operas in English and condense them to about four and a half minutes each. This idea is not original or new; in fact the Victor Talking Machine Company came up with it about a century ago. Here is the world’s most famous sad-clown story, Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci, as recorded in 1913, sung in English and reduced to one side of a twelve-inch record.

La traviata (Italian:, The Fallen Woman) is an opera in three acts by Giuseppe Verdi set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. It is based on La Dame aux camélias (1852), a play adapted from the novel by Alexandre Dumas fils. The opera was originally titled Violetta, after the main character. It was first performed on 6 March 1853 at the La Fenice opera house in Venice.
La traviata premiered at the La Fenice opera house in Venice on the 6 March 1853 and was set to an Italian libretto by Francesco Maria Piave. Throughout its premiere, audience members mocked the fact that Fanny Salvini-Donatelli, the soprano singing the role of Violetta, was an unrealistic choice as a desired courtesan.
