Claudio Abbado Conducts Mussorgsky. The Triumphal March and the Chorus of Priestesses are two stand out tracks for me but it is an album of great music not just worthy of listening but of repeat listening. One person found this helpful. so good is Abbado in this music it's positively spooky! Where many other modern conductors can produce pretty good results in the dramatic end of these selections, Abbado goes them all one better by the nature of orchestra playing.

Modest Mussorgsky Biography (BBC). Born into a prosperous land-owning family on a country estate 300 miles south of St Petersburg, Modest Musorgsky first appeared on the Russian musical scene as an elegant 17-year-old army offcer with a dilettantish interest in the arts. A year later, in 1857, he was taken under the wing of Mily Balakirev, an ardent proponent of a genuinely Russian art as well as a fanatical admirer of Berlioz and Liszt. Just before his death Ilya Repin painted the tragic image that we always associate with Musorgsky; the works, whether in their incomparably vivid original form or in the well-meaning revisions by Rimsky-Korsakov and others, tell a different story. Modest Petrovich Mussorgsky (Russian: Модест Петрович Мусоргский, Modést Petróvich Músorgskiy,; 21 March 1839 – 28 March 1881) was a Russian composer, one of the group known as "The Five".

Berliner Philharmoniker Claudio Abbado. Recorded in Suntory Hall in Tokyo in 1994, this concert with Claudio Abbado gives an impression of just the kind of reception they are given. The programme includes major works from the Russian repertoire which are shown to their best advantage in the outstanding acoustics of this concert hall. Suntory Hall, which was opened in 1986, is a kind of home-from-home for the Berliner Philharmoniker – it even stands in Herbert von Karajan Square.
