Features Song Lyrics for Dexter Gordon's The Art of the Ballad album.

Along with Gene Ammons and Stanley Turrentine, Dexter Gordon was one of the top ballad players of the '60s. Having already made his name in the bebop era and as an expatriate in Europe, Gordon returned to the States to record a series of fine Blue Note discs during the first half of the decade.

Dexter Gordon was one of the top ballad players of the '60s. Gordon delivers his almost sleepy and smoke-filled solos with real grace. The same can also be said of the rest of this incredible program, including a latter-day live cut from 1978. This album is soulful blues, late night kinda jazz. It is one of the albums I always recommend to people, right along with Miles Davis "Kind of Blue" and "Round About Midnight". Dexter Gordon is one of those jazz players that moved to Paris and for years lived as an ex-pat, committing his life to his music.

Love for Sale (subtitled Dexter In Radioland Vol. 5) is a live album by American saxophonist Dexter Gordon recorded at the Jazzhus Montmartre in Copenhagen, Denmark in 1964 by Danmarks Radio and released on the SteepleChase label in 1979. All compositions by Dexter Gordon except where noted. Introduction by Dexter Gordon – 1:28. Love for Sale" (Cole Porter) – 13:52.

Listen free to Dexter Gordon – Ballads (Darn That Dream, Don't Explain and more). Along with Gene Ammons and Stanley Turrentine, Dexter Gordon was one of the top ballad players of the '60s.

Part of Fantasy's The Art of the Ballad repackaging series, the Dexter Gordon volume has a limited window of opportunity, a period when the massive man was living in Europe and had only a fleeting presence in America at most. Nevertheless, he was still in fine, majestic form in those years, from which this CD takes nine samplings. Though the material mostly consists of standard ballads with acoustic hard bop combos, Gordon was not completely oblivious to the times, and those moments frankly are the high points of the disc.
