Physically based rendering (PBR) realistically simulates light bouncing around the scene. Because it only lights surfaces that get hit by the bouncing light, it renders shadows "automatically". That is, you don’t have to do anything to enable shadows – they are a "free" byproduct of physically based rendering. With the older rendering engines (ray tracing and micropolygon rendering), shadows must be simulated as "extra work" by the renderer.
Shadows cast by a tree, by a building, shadows cast by a chair or plant pot. The shadow that is falling onto the ground, or against a wall, or onto a table. The two most common lighting conditions when painting outside are direct sunlight and a cloudy sky and both influence the qualities of the cast shadow edge. Direct sunlight gives us a hard light source that creates clearly visible shadows and produces a hard crisp edge to the cast shadows. A cloudy sky gives us a soft light source which gives much subtler shadows with soft blurry edges. So you’d think hard light source, hard shadows.
In the Material Design environment, virtual lights illuminate the UI. Key lights create sharper, directional shadows, called key shadows. Shadows in the Material environment are cast by a key light and ambient light. Shadows provide useful cues about an surface’s direction of movement and whether the distance between surfaces is increasing or decreasing.
Cast shadows of irregular shapes and in natural sun light are open for interpretation because of the constant changing sunlight: As you work on location, the sun will continue to advance and change what you are drawing. Note the place you would have the sun be positioned, and keep that constant to avoid a confusing spread of shadows. The nature of shadow is affected by weather, sunlight, moonlight, or artificial light. Multiple Light Sources or an Undefined Light source
