Gavin Bryars 'Farewell to Philosophy' played by Julian Lloyd Webber and the English Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Judd ww. ulianlloydwebber.

The title piece from this album falls into line with many of Bryars' compositions after 1985 or so. In this case, it's a cello concerto with Julian Lloyd Webber in the soloist's role, but the music is generally quite similar to works by Bryars on recordings such as After the Requiem or The Last Days, which is to say broodingly romantic with a strong melancholic tinge. The music evokes perhaps a "northern" sensibility in terms of a bittersweet bleakness, and does this very well, but one gets the impression that the composer has long since mastered this particular genre.

Rather like Sibelius’s Swan of Tuonela, Gavin Bryars’s 1995 Cello Concerto (or Farewell to Philosophy, to quote its Haydn-inspired subtitle) emerges from among shadows, its solo line climbing sadly and patiently until the long first section takes its leave among Parsgial-style string figurations.

In 1997, classical composer Gavin Bryars wrote By the Vaar, an extended adagio for Haden. Instrumentation included strings, bass clarinet and percussion. The piece was recorded with the English Chamber Orchestra, on the album Farewell to Philosophy 2000–2014. In that beautiful moment, you experience your true insignificance to the rest of the universe. It is then, and only then, that you can experience your true significance. Haden also viewed jazz as the "music of rebellion" and felt it was his responsibility and mission to challenge the world through music, and through artistic risks that expressed his own individual artistic vision.
