The embryo of the historic samba group A Voz do Morro was conceived during the period in which Zé Kéti was the musical director of Cartola's restaurant Zicartola, where the sambistas were for the first time in close contact with middle-classed artists, intellectuals, and fans.

Conjunto Voz do Morro was one of the groups formed at Zicartola, in an effort to give more publicity to the greatest talents in samba do morro. L-R: Paulinho da Viola; Anescarzinho do Salgueiro; (??); Zé Cruz do Chapéu de Palha; Elton Medeiros; Zé Keti; Jair do Cavaquinho. Medeiros was born in the Glória neighborhood of Rio de Janeiro, where he lived until the family moved to Brás de Pina when he was seven. Just a year later he reportedly began composing sambas with neighborhood friends, and as a teenager he learned to play trombone and saxophone at school. In 1965, Élton Medeiros began singing with the groups Voz do Morro and Rosa de Ouro. Two groups that propelled the Zicartola set to samba stardom were born from the encontros at the restaurant: In 1965, Elton joined Herminio Bello de Carvalho’s musical show Rosa de Ouro.

This is a massive album – historically vital to the history of samba, an amazing and compelling listen; a group made up of heavy hitters in samba, and one of the earliest recordings of Paulinho da Viola, who sounds as refined and confident as he would ten years later. Oddly enough, as far as I know the only time it was issued on CD thus far is this Musidisc pressing done by Sonopress Brasil in 1995 (if I am reading the code correctly). The sound quality is as top notch as the music.

This is not the first Pernambuco album at Loronix and you should not take by mistake the percussionist Pernambuco do Pandeiro, also active during the 1950’s. Pernambuco was also in charge of arrangements and some organ playing. The conjunto brings important musicians, such like the bassist Luis Marinho and the legendary Brazilian guitarrist Bandeirante. Conjunto A Voz do Morro (3). Conjunto Arpoador (1). Conjunto Balambossa (3).
