Gigue Composed By – Johann Sebastian Bach Cello – Janos Starker Recorded in April 1963, September and December 1965 at Ballroom Studio A, Fine Recording Studios, New York. This Mercury Living Presence recording sounds rich and fresh even today. Starker's tempi are slightly fast and the musical lines come through clearly and joyfully

The six Cello Suites, BWV 1007-1012, are suites for unaccompanied cello by Johann Sebastian Bach. They are some of the most frequently performed and recognizable solo compositions ever written for cello. Bach most likely composed them during the period 1717–23, when he served as Kapellmeister in Köthen. The title given on the cover of the Anna Magdalena Bach manuscript was Suites à Violoncello Solo senza Basso (Suites for cello solo without bass).

This is Janos Starker's fifth recording of Bach's cello suites. His third set, for Mercury (423 756-2), is even more perfectly played. But the musical maturity, the subtlety of inflection and expression, in this set is truly incomparable. Unlike his earlier recordings, Starker now plays all the marked repeats in the score, making them an even richer experience. This playing satisfies all requirements of the head and the heart; it makes every point you want to hear, and it's profoundly moving

Johann Sebastian Bach - Suites for Solo Cello. Bach Cello Suites Janos Starker RCA 61436. Johann Sebastian Bach. Almost every great cellist of the twentieth century has recorded Johann Sebastian Bach's six Suites for Solo Cello The Solo Cello Suites are perhaps the cellist's equivalent of climbing Everest, or more accurately, reaching enlightenment. It takes prodigious talent and a lifetime of study. All music is communication - the composer speaking to the audience, conveying an emotional, intellectual state. A solo instrument recital is the most direct, the most intimate; almost embarrassingly confronting. Especially the cello, possessing as it does the most human-like sound of all instruments.

The Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello by Johann Sebastian Bach are acclaimed as some of the greatest works ever written for solo cello. They were most likely composed during the period 1717–1723, when Bach served as a Kapellmeister in Cöthen. The suites contain a great variety of technical devices, a wide range of emotional content, and some of Bach's most compelling voice interactions and conversations.

This is a brilliant performance. Easily among the best, which is all one can really claim, I think, given each performance must make decisions that preclude others. If you love these suites, you owe it to yourself to have this recording among your set. As a pressing, this is the most thrilling I have heard. In fact, it is probably the most spectacular recording I have heard, period, at least on my system, which is no slouch. $100 is a significant outlay. In this case, well worth it. Baby it and let it love you back for the rest of your life.

I put this on again yesterday in honor of his passing. What a beautiful recording, and this pressing makes it shine all the more. Highly recommended.
