Dillard & Clark - Out on the Side 1968 Gene Clark - guitar, harmonica, vocals Doug Dillard - banjo, fiddle.

The album was recorded in 1968, shortly after Gene Clark departed the Byrds for the second time, and Doug Dillard left the Dillards. The album is hailed by critics and musicians as a unique masterpiece at the intersection of country rock and americana. Clark's debut solo album, Gene Clark with the Gosdin Brothers, had been a commercial failure.

This Dillard and Clark compilation is great: it contains pretty much all of their material (2 albums plus four bonus tracks). Through the Morning, Through the Night is OK-some extra group members are added, diluting (in my opinion) the great sound that Dillard and Clark had worked up for themselves on the first album, and playing mostly covers. The title track, "Kansas City Southern," and "Polly," which are all Gene Clark originals not coincidentally, are the highlights. Overburdened by covers and more of a bluegrass tone, the second album is good, but not great.

For Gene Clark, the Byrds were a distant memory. The Flying Burrito Brothers had not yet taken off. So, in late 1967 and early 1968, he gathered with Doug Dillard, Chris Hillman, Bernie Leadon, David Jackson, and Donna Washburn (among others) to produce his version of Gram Parsons' "American Music" and succeeded artistically, if not commercially. there are th. iscover more music, concerts, videos, and pictures with the largest catalogue online at Last. It adds "Why Not Your Baby", "Lyin' Down The Middle" and "Don't Be Cruel" to the original songs on the separate releases. For Gene Clark, the Byrds were a distant memory.

Dillard & Clark, a duo featuring former Byrd Gene Clark and Doug Dillard of the Dillards, was one of the first country-rock groups to form in the late '60s. The group formed in 1968 and became one of pioneers of country-rock, releasing two albums before dissolving after releasing only two albums. The Banjo Album In 1968, Dillard recorded his first solo album, The Banjo Album, which featured such rock musicians as Clark and Bernie Leadon. The record was recorded with Bernie Leadon (guitar), Don Beck (dobro, mandolin), and David Jackson (bass). Dillard & Clark toured following the release of the album; their supporting band featured former Byrd Michael Clarke on drums.
