It was re-recorded in 1982 in New York as "Uncertain Smile" in 1982 after The The had been signed by Epic Records in the USA. That version, which featured flutes and a saxophone solo from session player Crispin Cioe peaked at on the UK singles chart. The most-familiar version, which was recorded for the Soul Mining album, replaced the saxophone with a lengthy Jazz piano solo by Squeeze's Jools Holland (better known now as the host of BBC' TV's music show Later).
Three Orange Kisses From Kazan. Waitin' For The Upturn. Both tracks are parts of the outstanding album "Soul Mining" (1983). On this release there is also the famous work "GIANT" which was the greatest success of Matt Johnson and Paul Hardiman. This song has an incredible ingenious arrangement dramaturgy with a very long percussion part for that time in which it was published. Also there are great creative electronic sounds (which I miss today's most techno productions) and hard beats like a hammer beating into a stone

Artist: The The. Album: 45 RPM - The Singles of The The, 2002. Peeling the skin back from my eyes I felt surprised That the time on the clock was the time I usually retired To the place where I cleared my head of you But just for today I think I'll lie here and dream of you. I've got you under my skin where the rain can't get in But if the sweat pours out Just shout I'll try to swim and pull you out. A howling wind blows the litter As the rain flows And streetlamps pour orange colored shapes Through your windows A broken soul stares from a pair of watering eyes Uncertain emotions force an uncertain smile.
