The Beethoven Broadwood, manufactured in London in 1817. Thomas Broadwood and Ludwig van Beethoven. In 1817 leading piano maker Thomas Broadwood, fourth son of John Broadwood, set off on an extended tour of Switzerland, Austria and Germany. In Vienna he met Beethoven, then 47, who was by then quite unwell and starting to become deaf. Broadwood decided to present the composer with his latest grand piano. EMI Classics released a landmark album of Tan playing the Beethoven Broadwood the same year (CDC 7 54526 2). The piano (serial features the English grand action, and has a 6 octave keyboard. Broadwood pianos were much stronger than Viennese instruments and consequently allowed a much greater string tension. This gave them the distinct and more powerful sound demanded by pianists of the time.

Beethoven owned a Broadwood fortepiano built in 1817, a gift from Thomas Broadwood who had met Beethoven in Vienna in the summer of that year. Broadwood asked five fortepianists living in London to help him select the appropriate instrument and had the names of these men engraved on a plaque. The keyboard of Beethoven's Broadwood spanned six octaves (CC to c''''), slightly narrower than the Beethoven Center's 1823 instrument (which extends up to f''''). Melvyn Tan, Roger Norrington, London Classical Players. Beethoven: The 5 Piano Concertos. Recorded in three sessions between 1988 and 1989 for Virgin Classics, Melvyn Tan and Roger Norrington's performances of Beethoven's five piano concertos produced something of a sensation when they were first issued. Purists who valued the big tone of the modern concert grand and the big sound of the modern symphony orchestra were dismayed at the tinkly tone of Tan's fortepiano and the scrawny sound of Norrington's London Classical Players.
