Old Brown Shoe" is a song by the English rock band the Beatles. Written by George Harrison, the group's lead guitarist, it was released on a non-album single in May 1969, as the B-side to "The Ballad of John and Yoko". The song was subsequently included on the Beatles' compilation albums Hey Jude, 1967–1970 and Past Masters, Volume Two. The Beatles rehearsed "Old Brown Shoe" during the sessions for their album Let It Be in January 1969.
The song, chronicling the events associated with Lennon’s marriage to Yoko Ono, was the Beatles’ 17th and final UK number one single.
The Beatles performed two versions Old Brown Shoe on 27 January 1969, during the Let It Be sessions at Apple Studios. The first was sung by Harrison with just a piano accompaniment, followed by an attempt by the whole group with Billy Preston. The next day they returned to the song, playing through it eight times, and once more on 29 January. These versions have all been bootlegged from the hours of rehearsals and jams taped by The Beatles for the Let It Be album. Old Brown Shoe is streets ahead of The Ballad Of John and Yoko. John Lennon’s uptempo ballad was written in Paris during his and Yoko’s honeymoon in 1969. It is the story of their wedding in Gibraltar, and through Paris to their bed in week in Amsterdam, a short jaunt to Vienna and back to London. Recorded with Paul only, since George and Ringo were out of town. Paul played drums as well as Bass. John played both the rhythm and lead guitar lines. This was the Beatles last single in the UK, and the only one recorded in stereo. It was included on the Beatles compilation album Hey Jude, released in 1970 in North America
