Fischer-Dieskau says "much that was new and hitherto unnoticed was still to be discovered on this occasion in a part which is particularly close to my heart" and we shall see how true that is when we come to Acts 2 and 3. I have never cared much for the doubling of parts in opera but it is certainly a pleasure to. have Venus's music so well sung as it is by Nilsson. Theo Adam makes an authoritative Landgrave, excellent in declaration, less good in legato passages. We come now to Wolfram's address to the knights and ladies, which he accompanies on the harp and this is one of the finest things in this recording. Fischer-Dieskau's sovereign way with words is superbly manifested here, and with deeper tones than before.

Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau (28 May 1925 – 18 May 2012) was a German lyric baritone and conductor of classical music, one of the most famous Lieder (art song) performers of the post-war period, best known as a singer of Franz Schubert's Lieder, particularly "Winterreise" of which his recordings with accompanist Gerald Moore and Jörg Demus are. still critically acclaimed half a century after their release. You may hear Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau singing in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera The Marriage of Figaro K. 492 with the RIAS Symphony Orchestra conducted by Ferenc Fricsay in 1961 Here on archive. Birgit Nilsson Wolfgang Windgassen Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau Theo Adam Chor und Orchester Deutsche Oper Berlin Otto Gerdes (conductor). This recording of Wagner's Tannhäuser (Dresden version) was released on CD only a couple of years ago (at a bargain price). While the conductor is relatively unknown (he was Karajan's assistant in a number of projects), the cast is very strong, and the same can be said for orchestra and chorus. Nilsson, who sings both Venus and Elisabeth, is at her very best. While these roles are not ideally suited to her, she uses her powerful voice with great imagination over a wide dynamic spectrum. Windgassen was one of the last tenors with a true "Heldentenor" quality.
