That included the recorded output of Maria Callas, one of the greatest artists of the twentieth century. The studio recordings were remastered in 2014, many satisfactorily, many problematically. Now Warner has issued a number of the live recordings that EMI published beginning in 1980, and a few others. It is important to note that with releases in and after 1990, all EMI live Callas performance CDs were taken from from older releases by small companies, many out of print or out of business and re-EQ'd. What I have listened to is wonderful of course, each one showing Callas at her live best, which is to say, the greatest soprano of the 20th century in excellent voice. Some of the performances are earth shattering: Aida, Lucia, Traviata, Tosca, Norma (for example). Others are merely wonderful.

Maria Callas was an American-born Greek opera singer, often regarded as the greatest ever soprano. She combined a wonderfully versatile voice with a natural ability for drama. She made opera popular with millions of people and her recordings are studied by budding opera singers today. Callas’ own life has been rich enough to be the subject of an opera. Callas was born in New York and raised in Greece. Her mother recognized Maria’s singing talents early on.
EMI's generous compilation of 100 tracks from its archive of recordings by Maria Callas makes a fine introduction to her legacy. Callas' voice isn't consistent throughout, but when she's at her best, it's easy to hear the musical and dramatic power that made her the most legendary opera singer of the 20th century. She is impressive often enough that it's not hard to forgive the performances that are less than stellar
Although Maria Callas died over three decades ago, she remains an icon: as a supreme singing-actress; as a celebrity, and as a woman of great style and elegance. The epitome of the operatic diva, the American-born Greek soprano is recognised as a singer who defined, and even redefined opera in the 20th century and she has never lost her place among the world’s top-selling classical artists. To celebrate the release of Maria Callas: Pure, Warner Classics’ new definitive, remastered compilation of La Divina’s most exquisite recordings, here are ten of Callas’ most memorable career highlights
