Judy at Carnegie Hall is a two-record live recording of a concert by Judy Garland at Carnegie Hall in New York, with backing orchestra led by Mort Lindsey. This concert appearance, on the night of Sunday April 23, 1961, has been called "the greatest night in show business history". Garland's live performances were a big success at the time and her record company wanted to capture that energy onto a recording. The double album became a hit, both critically and commercially.

The recordings of Judy Garland helped Wainwright to emotionally process the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. According to Pitchfork Media, Wainwright "started listening to the Carnegie Hall album in the weeks and months after September 11, craving some cheap showbiz cheer, but wound up discovering something deeper". The subsequent War on Terrorism and invasion of Iraq caused Wainwright to become "traumatized and disillusioned with anything American"

Recorded and released in 1961, Judy at Carnegie Hall is one of the greatest live albums of all time, and the greatest of Garland's career. There's true electricity in each song, and her renditions of "That's Entertainment," "The Man That Got Away," and "Come Rain or Come Shine" will give you goose bumps, they're so loaded with emotion. With relentless verve, Garland takes on her entire musical catalogue with astonishing aplomb. There is little sign of the decades of self-abuse which had left her frail by the early '60s

Somehow that album, no matter how dark things seemed, made everything brighten. She had this capacity to lighten the world through the innocence of her sound. Her anchor to the material was obviously through her devotion to music. Oremus served as orchestra conductor and music director for Rufus Wainwright's 2006 Judy Garland tribute concert, which was released as the 2007 album Rufus Does Judy at Carnegie Hall and DVD Rufus! Rufus! Rufus!

This issue of the album restores the live version of "Alone Together", which (due to a missing tape) was substituted with a studio version for the 1989 CD release. Other Versions (5 of 38) View All. Cat.

Judy At Carnegie Hall: F.has been added to your Cart. It is no exageration to say that there has never been a concert of American Popular Songs like it; not before and definitely not since. Time has done nothing to diminish this concert's greatness in terms of pure performance power and emotional immediacy and impact. Judy's Carnegie Hall triumph is all the more miraculous when one considers the shaky months that proceeded it. In late 1959, Judy became deathly ill and was hospitalized for several months. Doctors told her she would never work again, and she would remain a semi-invalid for the rest of her life
