Wagner: Die Meistersinger Von Nürnberg. I have more recordings by Herbert von Karajan than any other conductor in a large recording library, and I have defended his great artistry for over 40 years. Sadly it is impossible for me to register anything more than a sad sigh as to what might have been had this recording been better cast and the Maestro had not been in what I refer to gently as, the beginning of his anal years, which DID get worse from time to time as he became something of a recording engineer and stage. Fault cannot be found with the Dresden Staatskapelle orchestra or Staatsoper chorus or the Leipzig Radio Chorus. Neither is there any reason to quibble with EMI's engineering team, other than a little too much echo surrounding choral parts here and there which draws attention to the studio bound nature of the project.

And at least by the time Wagner's opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg premiered, he had become synonymous with a certain kind of urban lifestyle: Hans Sachs is portrayed by Wagner as an ambassador for a traditional institution that, though positively viewed, is in need of reform. In 2000 Kirill Petrenko made his debut at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino, in 2001 at the Vienna Staatsoper and the Dresden Semperoper, in 2003 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Opéra National de Paris, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, the Bayerische Staatsoper, the New York Metropolitan Opera and in 2005 at the Oper Frankfurt. Since September 2013 Kirill Petrenko has been General Music Director at the Bayerische Staatsoper. He will be working in this position until the end of the 2019/20 season.
