Rosalía’s new album, El Mal Querer, is less rigorous than its predecessor, though even easier to like. Los Ángeles adhered closely to the structures of flamenco, with careful guidance from the producer Raul Refree. So as Rosalía sings staunch, trembling lines about jealousy and rapture and romantic torment, there are riptides of festival-ready electronic bass in Pienso En Tu Mira and decaying lines of pitch-shifted vocals in De Aqui No Sales - along with that vrooming motor, screeching car-brakes and shrieking sirens. This one is primed to shred a club: During the song’s second half, Rosalía introduces a ghost of a four-on-the-floor kick drum and changes her singing style so her voice becomes yet another form of percussion. Rosalía makes a fantastic transition into modern pop aesthetics without sacrificing her flamenco roots. View All. the13thbeach.

Known for her modern interpretations of flamenco music and her deeply conceptual approach to both music and visuals, Rosalía has crossed over into the international sphere after receiving praise from critics and audiences alike, and several collaborations with artists such as J Balvin and Pharrell Williams.
As is customary for flamenco singers trying to make their name, Rosalía makes sure to demonstrate her mastery of all the different strands (or palos) of flamenco, such as alegrías, fandangos, tangos, tarantas, and malagueñas, among others. Despite this variety, Los Ángeles was ostensibly designed as a single piece with granite-like production consistency and arrangements as downright austere as the music is deadly serious. Death indeed hovers over almost every single lyric - most culled from oral tradition or popular folk songs: Loss, murder, domestic abuse, exile, revenge, and suicide.
