This film tells the story of Paul Simon's landmark 1986 album, Graceland.
Graceland is the seventh solo studio album by American singer-songwriter Paul Simon. It was produced by Simon, engineered by Roy Halee and released on August 25, 1986, by Warner Bros. Following a successful but fraught reunion with his musical partner Art Garfunkel, Simon's marriage had fallen apart and his previous record, Hearts and Bones (1983), was a commercial failure. In 1984, after a period of depression, Simon became fascinated by a bootleg cassette of South African township music

Paul Simon started calling his song "Graceland" after he came up with the track, which reminded him of the Sun Records sound where Elvis recorded. Simon says this song is an example of "how a collaboration works even when you're not aware of it occurring. He traveled to South Africa in February 1985 and recorded with a variety of local musicians. This is the title track of Simon's most successful album, selling over 15 million copies and winning a Grammy for Album of the Year. It is an album focusing mostly on African music, but it also explores other forms of non-mainstream music, like Zydeco.
With Graceland, Paul Simon hit on the idea of combining his always perceptive songwriting with the little-heard mbaqanga music of South Africa, creating a fascinating hybrid that re-enchanted his old audience and earned him a new one. It is true that the South African angle (including its controversial aspect during the apartheid days) was a powerful marketing tool and that the catchy music succeeded in presenting listeners with that magical combination: something they'd never heard before that nevertheless sounded familiar.
Paul Simon released 'Graceland' on August 25, 1986. Paul Simon's decade wasn't going so great when he started work on his sixth solo album in October 1985. The two albums he released in the previous five years were nowhere near as popular as those he made during his mid-'70s run, when Still Crazy After All These Years won the coveted Album of the Year Grammy.
Classic Album: Graceland. Simon And Garfunkel are the most successful duo in recording history and following their split in 1971 both Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel have carried on to have hugely successful solo careers and enjoyed occasional reunions. This concert was filmed at Philadelphias Tower Theater in 1980 and captures Paul Simon in fine form with a superb backing band featuring most of Stuff. The setlist ranges across his career up to that point and includes both Simon and Garfunkel and solo hits
