Abbey Lincoln's brilliant rendition of by Mongo Santamaría's 'Afro Blue' from her album 'Abbey is Blue' (1959). Lyrics written by Oscar Brown, Jr.

Abbey Is Blue is the fourth album by American jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln featuring tracks recorded in 1959 for the Riverside label very memorable".

Abbey Lincoln began her career in the early '50s as a supper club singer of torch songs; her striking beauty made it convenient for record labels to market her as a kind of black Marilyn Monroe. But it didn’t take long for Lincoln to realize she wanted something more, especially after meeting future husband and legendary drummer Max Roach, who encouraged her to branch out in her musical repertoire and style. On 1959's Abbey Is Blue, Lincoln does just that. This masterpiece of self-expression captures Lincoln perfectly poised between jazz for show and jazz as serious as your life

In 1959 Abbey Lincoln was poised to make a truly great album, and Abbey Is Blue was it. Not only was it a breakout performance for Lincoln, who delivered on the promise she had already shown, it was also a breakthrough performance in jazz singing. With the civil rights movement looming over the horizon, no longer did singers need to stick with standards and Tin Pan Alley tunes and could truly sing about subjects that mattered to them.
