Claude Debussy's Préludes are 24 pieces for solo piano, divided into two books of 12 preludes each. The titles of the preludes are highly significant, both in terms of their descriptive quality, and in the way they were placed in the written score.

Préludes, Vol. ~ Release group by Claude Debussy; Monique Haas. Release group information. Artist: Claude Debussy; Monique Haas. Unlike some notable collections of preludes from prior times, such as Chopin's Op. 28, or the preludes from Johann Sebastian Bach's Well-Tempered Clavier, Debussy's do not follow a strict pattern of key signatures. Each book was written in a matter of months, at an unusually fast pace for Debussy

Monique Haas plays with sensitivity, clarity, drama, but within a quality of French 'coolness', objectivity even. I may have heard the Preludes done as well before, but not better. Of the better-known Preludes, Sunken Cathedral has pace, mystery, and wonderful variety of tone. Maid with the Flaxen Hair is simple but poignant and lyrical. Dead Leaves and Ondine are also highlights, but really, everything is done to perfection. The recording dates from 1963, but is good to the point that one would never guess it goes back that many years

Monique Haas was one of DG's principal pianists in the 1950s. Her play is marked by its elegance, passion and wonderful articulation. Monique Haas (1909-1987) received the Premier Prix in 1927 from the Paris Conservatoire before going on to study privately. Album including Album cover. I& sorry!
