Stravinsky describes the 15-minute Renard, based on Russian folk stories and written in 1925 and 1916, as "a burlesque tale in song and dance," and it is a curious hybrid of opera and ballet. Where the music of Le Rossignol is reminiscent of the lyricism of The Firebird, Renard, for four male soloists and chamber orchestra, is closer to the more acerbic world of Petrushka or L'histoire du soldat. The same forces turn in a snappy, perky performance of the score. EMI's sound is admirably clear and detailed, but just a little distant.

Stravinsky - Le Rossignol ~ Renard, Dessay, McLaughlin, Urmana, Naouri, Caley, Mikhailov, Conlon is a recording with two performances under the direction of James Conlon. First one gets to hear The Nightingale which is a lyrical tale in 3 acts after the work of Andersen. The second performance is Renard the Fox, which is a burlesque tale in song and dance. The booklet contains all the lyrics, well-written music notes and short and concise biographies of the performers. I very much enjoyed these works by Stravinsky. Truly the work of a genius! Highly recommended.

Stravinsky Le Rossignol; Renard. A fine recording of Stravinsky's colourful ballet, The Nightingale, with Natalie Dessay perfect in the title-role. View record and artist details. Record and Artist Details. The Nightingale is an awkward piece, begun before The Firebird but finished, unwillingly, only after Stravinsky had decisively changed his own direction and that of Western music with The Rite of Spring.
