An Explosive Cinema Concert, Pink Floyd: Live At Pompeii is a small, personal film, which sets Pink Floyd, then at the tail end of their space rock phase, at the very heart of the European art scene. It crowned the era in which the group were scoring ballets, adding soundtracks to foreign art movies and recording in Paris. With a h-made film set in an arena at the heart of the origins of Europe, Live At Pompeii represents Floyd as part of a continental musical movement, quite distinct from their American contemporaries

Over four days from 4-7 October, the band performed a mixture of their better-known songs along with new material from their latest album Meddle. Although it was not a public gig, a few of the local children managed to sneak in and get to hear an exclusive free performance from one of the biggest rock bands of the period. Footage from Pompeii was supplemented by extra material recorded in Paris. This was overlaid with images of Italian waterfalls and the mosaics at Pompeii.

Additional footage filmed in a Paris television studio the following December was added for the original 1972 release. The film was then re-released in 1974 with additional studio material of the band working on The Dark Side of the Moon, and interviews at Abbey Road Studios. Pink Floyd were an English rock band formed in London in 1965. They achieved international acclaim with their progressive and psychedelic music.

Conceived by the French director Adrian Maben as "an anti-Woodstock film," Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was shot in October 1971 in a vacant, 2,000-year-old amphitheater-a venue chosen to accentuate the grandeur and spaciousness of the band's Meddle-era music. This disc contains a new, 90-minute director's cut as well as the original 60-minute concert film, whose production and effects feel inescapably dated. But for all the director's talk of the glorious acoustics in Pompeii's amphitheater, there's little natural ambience to be heard.
