From 1970 to 1974 Gibbs was musical director for the BBC TV comedy programme The Goodies. Michael Gibbs/ Gary Burton Quartet - Festival 69. Updated, Thursday, 22 Nov 2018 13:51. Vibes player Gary Burton on the cover of the Belfast Festival 69 programme. Three live CDs of peerless Mike Gibbs tunes and arrangements featuring the legendary American vibes player Gary Burton (born Indiana, 1943) will be of particular interest to aficionados of British jazz. The sound reproduction leaves a little to be desired at times throughout, but the spirit of commitment in these live performances is unquestionable. There is too that sense of remarkable joie de vivre that pervades the music, from Gibb’s popular composition, Tanglewood ’63 - all of 16 minutes 15 seconds - to the blues and swing exercises.

Gibbs and Burton met and became friends when studying at Berklee College of Music in the early 1960s, and both were students of trumpeter Herb Pomeroy. Burton's choice of numbers on the first and second CDs reflects his on-going fascination with Mike Gibbs's compositions. On the quartet CD, "Ballet" and "And On The Third Day," both by Gibbs, are afforded sublimely eloquent renditions
