Fame, the first all sound poetry release on Pogus, consists of 20 new polypoems produced by noted Italian sound poet, scholar, and sound poetry archivist Enzo Minarelli between 2008 and 2010. To quote from Minarelli’s liner notes: Every sound produced here, however strange it appears, has been made by my own voice; nearly 90% of this CD, the remaining 10% coming from the catalogue of special effects attached to the software. A very small percentage of sounds come from the musical side, a slight emphasis, and therefore the intervention will be perceived as non-musical music.
Sound poetry is an artistic form bridging literary and musical composition, in which the phonetic aspects of human speech are foregrounded instead of more conventional semantic and syntactic values; "verse without words". By definition, sound poetry is intended primarily for performance. While it is sometimes argued that the roots of sound poetry are to be found in oral poetry traditions, the writing of pure sound texts that downplay the roles of meaning and structure is a 20th-century phenomenon
Enzo Minarelli is one of the most significant sound poets of our time. First and foremost, he is a distinguished, important, even profound creative artist.
A1 Bread & Water Poems (in Polipoesia 1 - 1982-1990). A2 Rime In ò/ì (in Polipoesia 2 - 1982-1990). A3 People (in Polipoesia 1 - 1982-1990).
Some of his "polypoems" from the 1980s and 1990s were collected on The Sound Side Of Poetry (1991) and Whenwordies (1997). Fame (Pogus, 2012) manipulates the human voice with software and then adds sound effects. Unlike the previous recordings, these polypoems are very brief. There are no lyrics, just streams of vocal sounds. Many of them suffer from a lack of "musical" development.
