The ska sound of their first album No Doubt (1992) failed to make an impact. The Beacon Street Collection (1995) is a raw expression of their sound, inspired by ska punk and released independently by the band under their own record label. It was released on August 26, 1995. The tone of the album is more pop-oriented than any previous release featuring Schlitt. Most of the rock songs lack the driving edge of their previous albums, and the sonic field is no longer flooded with distorted guitars, leaning more toward a calculated, radio-friendly sound. All the guitars in the album were played by founder Bob Hartman.

Spiderwebs, another massive hit single from the record, starts off with the anticipated Jamaican influence-a golden blast of reggae rhythms and swooning horns-but quickly morphs into a fusion of ’80s new wave and West Coast pop-punk. Tragic Kingdom spawned an incredible seven singles including Don’t Speak, which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, and the album was nominated for a Grammy for Best Rock Album while No Doubt were nominated for Best New Artist. The record eventually sold 16 million copies worldwide by 2004, earning RIAA diamond status in the . and Canada, platinum in the . and triple platinum in Australia.

With success on the horizon, they quickly moved into more radio-friendly pop territory, launching a career that moved beyond alternative music festivals. As image-perfect as Disneyland, which sat in their backyard, No Doubt embraced a sound and look that countered the aggressive and raw aspects of grunge and punk. What little ska sound they had became buried under tightly crafted new wave currents.
