You might recognise "Every Man And Woman Is A Star" as the title of Ultramarine's perfect pastoral techno release from 1991. Twenty-three years later it still sounds wondrous and remains under-rated. Its diversion from the pumping 4/4 beats of the time meant it remained an after-club pleasure. Rough Trade Records are excited to announce the reissue of Ultramarine’s pioneering electronic album Every Man And Woman Is A Star. Acclaimed and respected at the time of its original release (initially on Brainiak Records in 1991 and then in expanded form in 1992 on Rough Trade), it now stands as a classic of its genre, an electronica record made before the term was coined.

The vocation of every man and woman is to serve other people.

That album is their debut, Every Man and Woman Is a Star. Released in 1992, that album fit right in with the psychedelic, ethereal "ambient house" or "chill out" music of acts like the Orb, KLF, and Aphex Twin. Ultramarine's Ian Cooper and Paul Hammond were nature-loving would-be hippies who thanked Birkenstock sandals in their liner notes. Every Man and Woman is a Star translated that pastoral ethos into music that was full of breezy, midtempo rhythms and shaded in with traditional instruments like violin and harmonica. The album is often cited as the genesis of what. A lot has happened in the world of electronic music since Every Man and Woman is a Star made such an impression. But after a long hiatus, with This Time Last Year Ultramarine prove second impressions can be pretty strong, too. ultramarine ian cooper paul hammond.

The name comes from the Latin ultramarinus, literally "beyond the sea", because the pigment was imported into Europe from mines in Afghanistan by Italian traders during the 14th and 15th centuries. Ultramarine was the finest and most expensive blue used by Renaissance painters. It was often used for the robes of the Virgin Mary, and symbolized holiness and humility.

Ultramarine: the quality of the shade is embodied in its name. This is the superlative blue, the end-all blue, the blue to which all other hues quietly aspire. The name means beyond the sea -a dreamy ode to its distant origins, as romantic as it is imprecise. For centuries, the lone source of ultramarine was an arid strip of mountains in northern Afghanistan.
