THE BEATLES - WHITE ALBUM OVERVIEW: In November 1968, millions of double LPs were shipped to record stores worldwide ahead of that tumultuous year’s most anticipated music event: the November 22nd release of The BEATLES (soon to be better known as ‘The White Album’). Dear Prudence came next, John Lennon warmly beckoning his friend and all of us to look around. The Beatles’ approach to recording for ‘The White Album’ was quite different from what they had done for ‘Sgt. The Beatles often recorded take after take for a song, as evidenced by the Super Deluxe set’s Take 102 for Not Guilty, a song that was not included on the album.

The album was recorded over nine non-consecutive days, between January and June 1964. In between the sporadic sessions The Beatles fulfilled their touring and filming commitments, with John Lennon and Paul McCartney writing some of their strongest songs to date. A Hard Day's Night became their first album to consist solely of original material, and was The Beatles only release to consist solely of songs written by Lennon-McCartney. Or, hmmm, maybe they could’ve taken I Call Your Name from the 4-song Long Tall Sally EP and added the two German songs in its place, thereby turning a 4-song EP and 13-song album into a 5-song EP and 14-song album – albeit one without a Ringo voca. NLES. ohn relinquished I’ll Cry Instead for Ringo to sing, which I’m sure he would’ve done quite nicely!

The only Beatles album that could really be classified as inessential, mostly because it wasn't really a proper album at all, but a soundtrack that only utilized four new Beatles songs. The rest of the album was filled out with "Yellow Submarine," "All You Need Is Love," and a George Martin score. What's more, two of the four new tracks were little more than pleasant throwaways that had been recorded during 1967 and early 1968. The album would have been far better value if it had been released as a four-song EP (an idea the Beatles even considered at one point, with the addition of a bonus track in "Across the Universe" but ultimately discarded).
