Bernard Johan Herman Haitink CH KBE (Dutch: ; born 4 March 1929) is a Dutch conductor. Haitink was born in Amsterdam, the son of Willem Haitink, a civil servant who was to become director of the Dutch electricity board, and Anna Clara Verschaffelt, who worked for Alliance Française. He studied the violin and conducting at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam. He played the violin in orchestras before taking courses in conducting under Ferdinand Leitner in 1954 and 1955.

On 4 March the Dutch grand seigneur Bernard Haitink will celebrate his 90th birthday. Shortly before then he will make a guest appearance with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, with which he has maintained friendly relations for more than 60 years. This time he will conduct an all-Beethoven programme that also places challenging tasks on the Bavarian Radio Choir. The pièce de resistance is the all-embracing Ninth Symphony, which blazed new trails in the symphonic genre with its revolutionary choral finale

Bernard Haitink rose steadily to the top in the 1960s as the long-serving principal conductor of Amsterdam’s Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra (where he was a former oboist). He was principal conductor of the London Philharmonic Orchestra from 1967 to 1979 as well as holding admired tenures as music director of Glyndebourne Festival Opera (1978-88) and the Royal Opera, Covent Garden (1987-2002). In 2006, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (CSO), appointed Haitink to the newly created position of principal conductor, for a four-year contract from 2006-2007 season

Bernard Haitink was born and trained in Amsterdam. His conducting career began in 1954 at the Netherlands Radio, where he took part in their intensive conductors’ courses, and where in 1957 he became the Chief Conductor of the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra. He went on to become Chief Conductor of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for 27 years. He is now Patron of the Radio Philharmonic, and Honorary Conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. This season Bernard Haitink returns to the Chicago Symphony, the Royal Concertgebouw, and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestras. The London Symphony Orchestra marks his birthday in March with a series of concerts, and he also conducts the Chamber Orchestra of Europe, Orchestra Mozart, the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonic Orchestras, as well as the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, with whom he performed his first public concert.
