Usually, it’s because the album is itself unknown to the masses, and only lives through the legacy it has left in a particular genre. Into the Depths of Sorrow is one of those albums. Solitude Aeturnus is a Doom metal band from the USA, more specifically Texas. The band was first formed in 87, under the name of Solitude, but underwent a name change and two demos (88, 89) before releasing their debut album Into the Depths of Sorrow in 1991. The one thing that differentiates this album (and band) from the Doom metal bands that originated in the early 90s are the vocals. Correct me if I’m mistaken, but bands like My Dying Bride and Katatonia both were formed in the early 90s and featured harsh vocals rather than clean vocals (this obviously changed as the bands progressed).
Solitude Aeturnus - Into the Depths of Sorrow 7 songs lyrics: Opaque Divinity, Transcending Sentinels, Dream of Immortality, Destiny Falls to Ruin, White Ship, Mirror of Sorrow, Where Angels Dare to Tread.
From the legendary extreme ultra-doom/death band Catacombs, "In the Depths of R'lyeh" has been in countless 'zines and two books, heralded as the only album to do justice to and truly capture the atmosphere of the works of . It offers arguably the darkest, most macabre, otherwordly and underworldly atmospheres, and a literal monolithic heaviness in sound and style. While extremely slow in pacing at imes, it's manages still to be driving, due to the rhythms, timings and composition. Matthew Arnold Much like Asunder's "A Clarion Call", this album pretty much gives me everything I want out of doom. I guess I'm mainly a funeral doom fan as I'm not really into the "trad doom" vocals; this is low, slow, heavy, deep and dank. A Lovecraftian epic, lots of bang for your buck here. Expertly executed otherworldly darkness.

The exciting thing about Into the Depths of Sorrow is thus that it has all the majesty and mystery of epic doom without sacrificing the pace and playing chops of more traditional metal, songs apt to peel off from holy vocal harmonies into squealing bouts of high speed melodic shredding. You won’t need to read that paragraph again to know that the vocals are absolutely key to the formula, which Robert Lowe provides here with all the desperation and conviction of a prophet stranded in the desert. On both re-releases are demo versions of Opaque Divinity & Mirror of Sorrow. Both sound good & are slightly different than the album versions. The Metal Mind album then has a version of Transcendiing Sentinels with the original vocalist singing.
