Don Giovanni; Otto Edelmann (bass). Leporello; Raffaele Arié (bass). Commendatore; Walter Berry (bass). Masetto; Elisabeth Schwarzkopf (soprano). Donna Elvira; Elisabeth Grümmer (soprano). Donna Anna; Erna Berger (soprano). Zerlina; Anton Dermota (tenor). This 2004 Orfeo d’Or issue is the first ‘official’ release of Wilhelm Furtwängler’s 1953 Salzburg Festival performance of Mozart’s Don Giovanni and has a superior cast to the same conductor’s other Salzburg performances in 1950 and 1954. What sadly lets this performance down is Furtwängler’s slow, stodgy conducting. He seems to impose the monumentality of Wagner and his own subjectivity onto the score, the result being a very heavy and ponderous nineteenth century interpretation with little if anything to do with Mozart’s sound-world.

Unlike many critics, I like Tito Gobbi's more malevolant Giovanni from Furtwangler's 1950 (if I remember right) Salzburg recording. As Donna Anna, Elisabeth Grümmer is febrile and impassioned but marginally over-parted and the top of her voice can be a little shrill. She is infinitely touching upon discovering their murdered father, but a hint of the Germanic "v" occasionally creeps into Grümmer's Italian in lines such as "Quello sangue".

Mozart: Don Giovanni: 1953 Salzburg Festival.

Giovanni conducted by Furtwängler and designed by Clemens Holzmeister (1953, with Cesare Siepi, Elisabeth Grümmer, Anton Dermota, Schwarzkopf, Otto Edelmann, Walter Berry, Raffaele Arié, Erna Berger; revival 1954, with Dezsö Ernster replacing Arié; 1956 with Dimitri Mitropoulos conducting), Gottlob Frick replacing Ernster, Léopold Simoneau replacing Dermota, Lisa Della Casa replacing Schwarzkopf, Fernando Corena replacing Edelmann, Rita Streich replacing Berger) an equally. Mozart: Don Giovanni (Grümmer, della Casa, Berger, Dermota, Siepi, Edelmann; Furtwängler, 1954) Deutsche Grammophon.

Taped at the Salzburg Festival on August 3, 1954, it features a tremendous cast from top to bottom, plus the best possible orchestral playing, and, beyond all argument, the greatest Mozart conductor in a performance of tremendous effectiveness and overwhelming spiritual impact. Why? Start with the cast. Cesare Siepi is a sexy and dangerous Don Giovanni. Elisabeth Grümmer is a heartrendingly affecting Donna Anna. Otto Edelmann is a robust and hilarious Leporello. Anton Dermota is so good he almost makes Don Ottavio appealing. Erna Berger is a saucy and seductive Zerlino. The young Walter Berry is so good he almost makes Masetto register as a character.

In 1953 Siepi debuted at the Salzburg Festival with a legendary Don Giovanni conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler, staged by Herbert Graf, and designed by Austrian architect Clemens Holzmeister. He made an immediate impact at the Salzburg Festival in the title role of Don Giovanni which became perhaps his best known role, as it had been for the most famous Italian bass of the generation before, Ezio Pinza. This performance has been released on CD, and a 1954 mounting of this production was filmed in color and released in 1955.
