Originally released as Tristano's Atlantic Records debut, the album was released on CD in 1994 by Rhino Records in combined form with Tristano's 1960 follow-up, The New Tristano, and as part of a collection, The Complete Atlantic Recordings of Lennie Tristano, Lee Konitz & Warne Marsh, in 1997. According to Ira Gitler in The Masters of Be-Bop, the overdubbing and tape speed manipulation on this album unleashed a furor. Tristano had begun experimenting in 1951, when he had additional piano tracks, some of which had been speeded up by engineer Rudy van Gelder, added to his recording of the songs "Ju Ju" and "Pastime".

Pianist Lennie Tristano was an early inspiration and a major influence on the playing of altoist Lee Konitz and tenor saxophonist Warne Marsh.

The celebrated Lee Konitz and Warne Marsh date from 1955 is a supreme accomplishment that has been gone from the Atlantic catalog for too long. Suffice it to say that this one is worth the price of admission and successfully pairs two of the music's most melodic players. Finally, Marsh's self-titled album cut in '57/'58 is another previously ignored gem that deserves renewed interest.

Warne Marion Marsh (26 October 1927 – 18 December 1987) was an American tenor saxophonist. Born in Los Angeles, his restrained, cerebral playing first came to prominence in the 1950s as a protégé of pianist Lennie Tristano, and earned attention in the 1970s as a member of Supersax.
