Third Stone from the Sun" (or "3rd Stone from the Sun") is a mostly instrumental composition by American musician Jimi Hendrix. It incorporates several musical approaches, including jazz and psychedelic rock, with brief spoken passages. The title reflects Hendrix's interest in science fiction and is a reference to Earth in its position as the third planet away from the sun in the solar system.
The Singles Collection is a posthumous compilation album by Jimi Hendrix, released in 2003 by MCA Records. The album is made up of ten discs, each of which contains one single released by Hendrix, including some after his death. All songs were written by Jimi Hendrix, except where noted. Hey Joe" (Billy Roberts). The Wind Cries Mary". Burning of the Midnight Lamp".
The version of "Third Stone From the Sun" has Chandler and Hendrix's recording of the spoken bits used on the song, tacked on to the beginning. It's great to hear Hendrix cracking up throughout their interstellar conversation. All in all, The Jimi Hendrix Experience is a fine addendum to the Hendrix legacy, but not the place to start; this is a set for someone who already has the studio albums and can't get enough of his genius. The disappointment a hardcore collector might feel at having heard most of this material already should be outweighed by the beautiful, warm sound achieved by Eddie Kramer and the general high quality of the package. Track Listing - Disc 1. Title/Composer.
Jimi Hendrix was an American guitarist and singer-songwriter whose career spanned from 1962 to 1970. His discography includes the recordings released during his lifetime. Prior to his rise to fame, he recorded 24 singles as a backing guitarist with American R&B artists, such as the Isley Brothers and Little Richard. Beginning in late 1966, he recorded three best-selling studio albums and 13 singles with the Jimi Hendrix Experience
Woodstock Sunday night headliner Jimi Hendrix didn't take the stage until 9 . Monday morning, but the guitarist nevertheless closed out the festival in memorable style. During a two-hour set, he ran through plenty of recognizable hits-"Hey Joe," "Purple Haze," "Foxey Lady"-and teased out a sprawling version of "The Star Spangled Banner. Although the song's recognizable melody was intact, Hendrix took liberties with nearly everything else. All told, the instrumental was mournful, frustrated and angry-a reflection of the Woodstock generation's patriotic disillusionment and a striking farewell to how things used to be. On this song especially, Hendrix's unique style and technique came to the forefront. A self-taught player who couldn't read or write music, Hendrix was a natural guitarist driven by feel, emotion and instinct.
