Twenty-five years after the release of Rick Wakeman's groundbreaking Journey to the Centre of the Earth album, a sequel entitled Return to the Centre of the Earth was released, this time including a who's who of musicians and vocalists. Still employing the London Symphony Orchestra to accompany his plethora of keyboards, Wakeman uses Patrick Stewart of Star Trek: The Next Generation fame to narrate the story and former Yes guitarist Trevor Rabin for some spicy solos. His first Journey album sounded clean and finessed, thanks to simple organization and the fact that the focal point was aimed at his masterful keyboard playing. On the Return album, the music is louder, messier, and somewhat musically obtuse since it contains too many fragments of instruments, almost sounding like heavy metal at times.

To hear just the narrative, programme your CD player to play the odd-numbered tracks; for just the songs and featured music, programme the even-numbered ones. To hear the full story, just let it run! Total timing: 76:31. This work is a sequel to "Journey to the Centre of the Earth" The Story is inspired by Jules Verne.

Of course the album is not perfect, "Return to the Centre of the Earth" has some flawed songs as the poppy "Still Watters Run Deep" only saved by the beautiful chorus, but over all the album is excellent. Rick Wakeman, in this sequel to "Journey To The Centre Of The Earth", makes the album that the original should have been. He hired a top notch narrator (Patrick Stewart), and singers that were up to the task of the material (Ozzy Osbourne, Justin Heyward and Bonnie Tyler). And Wakeman's maturity shows in the much more exciting orchestral arrangements.

The album is a live recording of his second of two concerts on 18 January 1974 at the Royal Festival Hall in London. With its concept based on Jules Verne's science fiction novel of the same name, the album tells the story of Professor Lidenbrok, his nephew Axel, and their guide Hans, who follow a passage to the Earth's centre originally discovered by Arne Saknussemm, an Icelandic alchemist. In 1999, Wakeman released a sequel, Return to the Centre of the Earth. He re-recorded the album with additional parts previously removed from the original score due to time constraints, in 2012. Released on 3 May 1974, Journey to the Centre of the Earth topped the UK Albums Chart for one week, the first album from A&M to do so.

The second cd contains a performance of the piece recorded in Boston also in 1974, while the third has a 1993 show from Buenos Aires. The DVD contains both quad surround and hi-res mixes of the album. What does it all mean ? It’s great to hear this old favourite in remastered form with improved sound quality. A minor gripe that the first half of that evening’s concert (excerpts from Six Wives) hasn’t been thrown in as an extra so that we have the full show. Nevertheless, some things just get better with age! Goes well with.

Based on the novel by Jules Verne, which will also mark its 150th anniversary in 2014, the album is one of the rock era's landmark achievements - a record that sold 15 million copies and rewrote the rules
