Ludwig van Beethoven's late string quartets are the following works: Opus 127: String Quartet No. 12 in E♭ major (1825). Opus 130: String Quartet No. 13 in B♭ major (1825). Opus 131: String Quartet No. 14 in C♯ minor (1826). Opus 132: String Quartet No. 15 in A minor (1825). Opus 133: Große Fuge in B♭ major (1825; originally the finale to Op. 130; it also exists in a piano four-hands transcription, Op. 134). Opus 135: String Quartet No. 16 in F major (1826).

I had not heard D 887 for a year or two – and I knew that I’d be in good hands with the Brandis Quartet, recorded in excellent sound. Much like the Reliquie Piano Sonata, its extraordinary first movement, in terms of scale and breadth, proclaims the genealogy between Schubert and Bruckner. The expanses it charts are galactic in mileage. That being said, part of me wonders – and dangerously.

This album was released on the label ZYX Classic (catalog number CLS 4179). The album included the following session artists: Composed By. Antonín Dvořák.

The Austrian composer Arnold Schoenberg published four string quartets, distributed over his lifetime: String Quartet No. 1 in D minor, Op. 7 (1905), String Quartet No. 2 in F♯ minor, Op. 10 (1908), String Quartet No. 3, Op. 30 (1927), and the String Quartet No. 4, Op. 37 (1936).
