Victor Feldman had first recorded as a leader when he was 13 and a swing-based drummer. In 1957, he moved from his native London to the United States, and by early 1958 (when he was 23) was in great demand as a pianist and vibraphonist. For his second American release and debut for the Contemporary label, Feldman is completely in the spotlight

Victor Stanley Feldman (7 April 1934 – 12 May 1987) was an English jazz musician who played mainly piano, vibraphone and percussion. He began performing professionally during childhood, eventually earning acclaim in the UK jazz scene as an adult. Feldman emigrated to the United States in the mid-1950s, where he continued working in jazz and also as a session musician with a variety of pop and rock performers.
Victor Feldman, a brilliant vibraphonist & painist from Britain 'arrives' with his first American release. Adding to the fun is legendary bassist, Scott LaFaro, at age 22 in one of his first small-group recordings (before he hooked up with Bill Evans). While Feldman stands tall on his own merits, fans of LaFaro will be interested to hear him playing a slightly more straight-ahead style, with his unique 'voice' just beginning to develop.

Shortly thereafter, Victor Feldman agreed to offer me lessons. I certainly "got lucky" in meeting Victor when I did as he proved to be a kind and gentle mentor from whom I learned so much. 1958 opened with Victor going into a Contemporary Records studio along with Scott LaFaro on bass and Stan Levey on drums to record The Arrival of Victor Feldman (Contemporary/OJC), a recording that was to become in many ways the most noteworthy of his career.
